During my travels, I love to keep up on other blogs and I thought I would share what I read in a blog called, Spoiled Rich Asian. She talked about the earthquake in Los Angeles, California and it prompted me to do some more research on the topic.
Since I live in Australia, earthquakes are pretty infrequent. We only have an earthquake above a 7 point magnitude maybe every 100 years. I have such little experience with this natural disaster that I was interested in her blog post about what the people in LA were dealing with. From what I understand, there was some building damage, but no one experienced any major injuries. In her blog post, she also mentioned that her friend lives in LA and was very shaken up by the event, I can only imagine how scary experiencing a large earthquake would be. Even though the damage was minimal, I think this a really good opportunity to talk about how we can help people recovering from these natural disasters.
Earthquake relief is so important because the after effects can be absolutely devastating, especially when these strong earthquakes are followed by tsunamis. While this LA earthquake wasn’t major, there have been so many in the last couple years that have wiped out homes and communities. Foundations like Red Cross and UNICEF provided aid to some of the cities effected by the major earthquakes in Mexico, Ecuador, and the Philippines. These organizations provide immediate care and long term aid in the form of food, water, shelter, protection, health-care, and psycho-social support. You can help make an impact by volunteering with groups like these, or even by making a small donation online. In situations like this, every little bit of support makes a big difference.
As I said before, I have had very little personal experience with earthquakes, due to my location. So I’m glad I read her blog post because it inspired me to learn more on the subject. It’s so relieving that the 7.1 quake didn’t resolve in any deaths, and I hope to help with the damage by donating to an earthquake relief foundation.
